Adi Chaham week 16: Missing Dog Reunited with Owner After 12 Years

Twelve years ago, in 2010, a dog named Zoey had disappeared after her owner, Michelle, went into a store for about 20 minutes. Michelle had gotten Zoey when Zoey and her twin sister were just six months old and only six months later, Zoey disappeared.

Five years later, in 2015, Zoey was listed as deceased in the microchip companies records after being missing for so long.

Surprisingly, on February 10, 2022, Brandon Levin, an animal services officer received a call about a stray dog. According to the caller, the dog was found at a property near Stockton, California and appeared to be “old and unwell”. After getting the dog and scanning it, the animal services officer discovered that the dog had been Zoey who had been missing for the past 12 years. Zoey is currently 13 years old.

Quickly, the sheriffs office had called Michelle, who moved to Benicia, California from Lafayette, California, where Zoey had gone missing in 2010. Luckily she had the same phone number so the police were quickly able to contact her. On that same day, Zoey was returned to Michelle and the two were reunited. On Friday, the Sheriff’s office had shared this incredible news by uploading a video of the two reuniting.

Michelle had mentioned that she is so excited to be reunited with Zoey after such a long time and ready to get her back to health. Michelle concluded stating that she has another 13 year old dog whom she can’t wait for Zoey to meet. Despite this news, there was no news regarding Zoey’s sister.

Do you have any pets? How would you have responded if your pet had gone missing and 12 years later, was found?

  1. As a dog owner, I would be traumatized if all of the sudden, my dog went missing. I would not know what to do, but I would hope that since my dog is always wearing a collar with a name tag that had my family's home phone number, someone would eventually call the number. That is why name tags for dogs are so important and now even some are using air tags.

  2. This is a crazy story and little Zoey is such a fighter. I had my share of pets in my life and it is a terrible feeling knowing if something is wrong with them. If a pet of mine went missing for over twelve years and I found them again, I am not sure how I would react because so much time had passed. Zoey’s owner, Michelle, did not really get the chance to know Zoey. However, it is some sort of miracle that they got to be reunited again and I am very happy for them both.

  3. I have two dogs and I have four dogs throughout my entire life. I love my dogs more than anything and even the thought of them being lost scares me. If one of my dogs, Rosie or Bella, went messing I would never be able to forgive myself. God forbid though, if they were missing and I found them 12 years later, I'd be rejoiced and surprised that they were both alive. I would probably burst out in tears and just be so uncontrollably happy.

  4. This is such a sad and yet joyous story. I was so upset when I started reading and then I got to the part where they reunited and I can't explain it. I think having pets makes you more emotional when it comes to hearing about situations like these. I have two dogs and if they ever went missing I would be so sad, I would never stop trying to look for them and get them back. If this ever happened to me and we were reunited I would definitely cry. How could I not?
