Adam Sobel Week 17 - Weird Laws

Laws are considered by many to be the backbone of a society. Without laws, what governs how people are supposed to act and how they will be punished for their acts. America has a very intricate legal system with different extrapolations, inferences, and complicated arguments for every law. But, some laws that are in either state or government constitutions are just outright weird and often humorous as well. Florida is well known for having many of these weird laws.

A lot of weird Florida laws are centralized around gender. For instance, one law says that unwed women aren't allowed to skydive on Sundays. It is also illegal for a woman to fall asleep under a hair dryer at a hair salon for whatever reason. For men, you aren't allowed to wear strapless gown in public, but that might be beneficial towards the public. Florida also has weird laws that are specific to places or times, like you can't roll a barrel down the street in Pensacola (but I guess you can do it elsewhere) or you can't eat cottage cheese after 6 pm in Tampa. Some of these laws are so specific that it makes me wonder about why they were needed in the first place. You can't tie an elephant to a parking meter without paying the parking fee, and you can't sell oranges on the side of Miami Beach. Why these very specific laws exist must have very funny or interesting stories behind them. I'd certainly like to hear about an elephant being tied to a parking meter in Florida or what happens when you sell oranges in Miami Beach. 2 more honorable mentions is that you can't sing in a swimsuit, and the punishment for horse death is currently listed as death by hanging.

While Florida has many weird laws, there are states all over the US that have their own weird laws. Spitting in Arizona can get you a fine of up to $2,500 or 6 months in prison. In Alabama, it's illegal to drive blindfolded. In Connecticut, it was illegal to sell pickles that wouldn't bounce when dropped from 1 foot above the ground. If Halloween happens to occur on a Sunday, it is illegal to go Trick-or-Treating in Delaware. In Kentucky, it is illegal to dye a bird or rabbit any color unless you are selling them in quantities of six or more. In the state of Missouri, it is legal for any person to castrate a bull as long as it has been roaming free for 3 days and 3 residents of the town it is loose in can confirm that it is aggressive. In New Jersey, you aren't even legally allowed to pump your own gas. Oregon has a law that you can't dispose of human waste while operating or riding in a motor vehicle. Lastly, Tennessee says that you can't share your Netflix password.

Many of these laws I find to be very funny to read about and equally curious as to what situation or event occurred that made it that these laws needed to exist in the first place.

What is your favorite weird law? Do you think that these laws are funny or that they can be potentially hurtful?

  1. This is so interesting, especially the fact that it is illegal to drive blindfolded, which you should not do even if it was legal. The laws are so random, and I wonder if people have actually gone to jail for doing these things.

  2. Some states have the weirdest laws. I used to play this game on the app Psych, and you had to guess which weird law was real. Did you know it is illegal to kill Bigfoot in Washington? I think some weird laws serve sometime of purpose, but overall they are just pretty funny.
