Adam Sobel Week 16 - TikTok Star's Dad Fatally Shoots Stalker

Rising Social Media influencer Ava Majury (age 15) had a dangerous experience in her home with an online stalker. She is active on TikTok (~1.2 million followers) and Instagram (~300,000 followers).

Last summer, a man that her family believes was an obsessive stalker appeared outside their Florida home with a firearm. Ava's dad, Rob Majury, recalled someone trying to breach through their front door with what he believed was a shotgun.

This alleged gunman was Eric Justin, an 18 year old who had frequently been sending messages to Ava through social media. He offered to buy images of her. With her parents' permission, she sold two non-explicit selfies that had already been posted online. Then, he began to ask for explicit and revealing photos. At that point, Ava and her family decided to cut him off due to the fact that she felt uncomfortable with that request and she was a minor.

When Justin arrived later at their home with a gun, Rob, a retired police lieutenant, shot him. Rob Majury said, "At that point I took action and neutralized the threat". Justin later died due to injuries from the gunshot wound.

The Collier County Sheriff's Office said that this case would continue as an ongoing investigation for the time being.

Following the incident, Ava and her family moved houses and she began homeschooling for this school year. Ava is still active on social media despite the incident. Ava said that she hopes her experience will help others realize the need to be more careful online with who they interact with and what information they are willing to share.

This incident is a reminder of the need to be careful of what we share online. The world can be a dangerous place if we aren't careful, and the internet, while having many benefits, also helps many of the dangerous people around the world stalk people online and harass them online or in person. Social media can be a dangerous place because of people like Eric Justin, and everybody should be aware to protect themselves and their information online. If you ever feel unsafe, even virtually, disconnect from that person or group and remember to report their account.

Have you ever felt unsafe online? How did you respond to the incident?

  1. I have personally not felt unsafe for my life online, but I have felt unsafe on the internet in general. If I do feel uncomfortable on the internet due to another person or user, I normally just block the user, so they cannot contact me again. Sometimes if I really felt unsafe or uncomfortable from the user I would report them.

  2. Personally, I have never felt unsafe online. On all of my social media platforms, I only follow/add people I know personally and only let people I know personally follow me back. However, if someone tries too contact me, that I don't know and makes me feel uncomfortable, I normally just block them.
