Adam Sobel Week 14 - Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Another conflict with Russia arises as Ukraine tries to join NATO. NATO was an organization created in 1949 to unite Canada, USA, and many Western European States in an alliance against the expanding Soviet Union. The Warsaw Pact was then created to ally the Soviet Union with Eastern European countries. When the Soviet Union ended, so did the Warsaw Pact. Today, with the Warsaw Pact and USSR gone, many of its former territories in Eastern Europe are attempting to join NATO in order to get support if Russia ever wants to gain more land and control them without permission. However, Russia doesn't want Ukraine joining NATO because they don't want more people allied against them.

Russia has always taken control of Eastern European states to use them as buffer states. During war, these states act as extra territory that Russia doesn't care if it gets destroyed and can stall their advancers from the heartland. The Russian government has been doing this since the 1800s and it has caused many delays to the development of Eastern European states.

When Ukraine began the process of joining NATO, Russia instantly began voicing their concerns on the world stage. Since nobody would listen, they recently began deploying troops on the border between Russia and Ukraine. They have also done practices and drills with their tanks, planes, and other weaponry. Since then, the US has evacuated people from Ukraine and Russia and moved troops in to train civilians and military alike in Ukraine. Russia has so far promised not to attack, but tensions are still increasing as NATO and the US point fingers at Ukraine, who then points fingers back.

Personally, I'm more worried about the impact of Russia invading Ukraine. If that happens, there is a relatively good chance that the US and Russia will restart the Cold War and we will enter a time with a lot of fear and uncertainty. Especially with the threat of nukes, life will become a lot more dangerous if the US and Russia begin to fight again. And I feel very concerned for our future, especially since there isn't much that individual citizens can do to ease tensions.

What about you? Are you concerned about the new increasing tensions between NATO and Russia? Or do you think tensions will decrease soon and life won't change much?

  1. As of right now, I believe and hope that these issues will naturally decrease. There is always tensions in politics and even though this is very serious compared to other issues, I think many people will recognize the threat and let tensions naturally decrease.
