Hannah Shinder- Week 1: Refusal of Wearing a Mask on Airplane
An American Airlines flight had to return back to its original location of departure due to a passenger on the airline refusing to wear her mask. This flight was departing from Miami and heading to London in which there were 129 passengers on board the aircraft. According to the airline, the flight was in the air for about an hour and a half before the aircraft crew decided to go back to the airport.
When the airline arrived back in Miami, the police were immediately at the scene in which they spoke with the woman who was in her 40’s and was refusing to wear her mask. One of the passengers on the plane who was interviewed by a news station said “…all they could say was there was an extreme incident with a passenger and they had to turn around”.
This leaves a lot of controversy as many of the passengers on the plane were either in shock or very disappointed. They felt as if they were being punished for a woman who refused to wear her mask. The main goal was to get to London safely, but they weren’t able to in the correct manner due to do the inconvenience.
The Federal Aviation Administration (U.S. Department of Transportation) has reviewed the case and even recognized that there have been many more incidents like this as well. They have reported as of this Tuesday, January 18, that there have been 151 reports of rowdy passengers so far this year and 92 related to masks. Do you think that the airline made the right decision in this case or should they have handled it differently?

I think the airline had to enforce their own rules which they did because if they had let this incident go, it would allow other incidents to happen. I understand why the lady would not have wanted to wear her mask because it can be a nuisance, but you have to abide by the rules of certain airlines. It's unfortunate that the other passengers had to pay the price as well.
ReplyDeleteI think that to refuse to wear your mask in someone else's plane/vehicle is very disrespectful. If you have your own plane and can make your own rules, for sure, go ahead, but if your in someone else's place, you have to listen to and respect their rules. However, to make a full trip back is very inconvenient for the passengers. The other passengers on the plane paid to be at a certain place at a certain time, and to take that away from them hurts me.
ReplyDeleteI think that the women should have worn her mask. It is well known that you need to wear a mask on airplanes, and there were probably multiple times where it would have clearly said to wear a mask while booking the ticket. Yes, wearing masks are uncomfortable and nobody likes it, but you agreed to wear a mask while on the flight.
ReplyDeleteI think that the women should've listened to the airline rules and worn her mask. Throughout the airport, there are several signs saying that masks are required and therefore, the lady must've known she needed to wear a mask on the airplane. I don't think it was fair to the other passengers who had to fly back home after an hour and a half of flight time when they were hoping to spend time in London.
