Adi Chaham week 1: Amazon is Going in Style
Months after introducing the opening of their Supermarkets, Amazon Fresh, Amazon announced last Thursday the opening of Amazon Style, the first in-person clothing store of Amazon. The first one will be opening later this year in the Americana at Brand shopping center in Los Angeles. The store will have men’s and women's clothing along with shoes and accessories for all. Unlike most retail stores, Amazon Style will display only one of each item giving more room for other designs and giving the customer a higher selection of goods. Furthermore, by only displaying one of each item, this doesn’t require the customer to take time to find the right color and size. Those working the store will be placing all sizes and all colors in the back of the store and the customer will only see one of the colors in one of the sizes on the rack.
Amazon Style also consists of several technological advancements that no other retail store has. For example, as shoppers walk into the store, they will use the Amazon shopping app to scan an item's QR code. Once they scan the item, the customer can choose to either add the item into a physical fitting room in which the app will notify them when their fitting room is ready, or they can order it to the counter for direct pickup. This QR choice will then be the key to the customer’s allotted fitting room. These unusual QR codes will also offer the sizes available along with customer ratings for each item. While in the fitting room, the shopper can access and request any additional items through a touch screen that would be delivered straight to their living room.
Amazon has further announced that their inventory will be changed frequently so that shoppers see new items every time they go shopping at Amazon Style but have yet to reveal the brands. A very prominent aspect of Amazon Style is that customers who didn’t end up buying what they wanted, can see the exact item online later. Amazon has yet to announce an opening date but stated that before opening will select a group of customers to experiment on the store.
While learning more about the new Amazon store, I wondered, what if someone’s phone battery died as they walked into the store and therefore can’t access the QR code, can they pay cash? Or will they have portable chargers available to customers?
Would you want to shop at Amazon Style? What do you think, will customers have access to portable chargers if their electronics run out of battery? Will they be able to pay cash? Or will they not be able to buy anything at all?
