Week 7 Avital Horowitz - The Truman Show
If you've ever heard of the movie the Truman Show, then you may have just been a tad freaked out after watching it. Although, if you haven't, I'll give you a quick summary. So basically, the Truman Show is about a man that was adopted by a film studio when he was just a newborn. The studio raised this man, Truman, for his entire life until adulthood. The catch though is actually quite a big one. Truman had no idea he was on a studio set. The entire time, Truman believed that he was simply living in a miny city, although this city was made specifically for him. The people that he saw on a daily basis were all actors, including the people in his life that were important to him. As the plot of the movie builds, he is given small clues that his life is quite literally a lie. At the end of the movie, Truman finds out he is on a set and escapes.
Now, you're probably wondering; "Avital, why are you writing a movie summary for your blog post?" Well, my blog post isn't really about the Truman Show, it's more about the manipulation used in the film. This movie proves how easy it can be to manipulate a person to your advantage. Many people do this without even knowing it.
Manipulation is a tricky thing. It is very difficult to avoid manipulation because in most manipulative cases, the people you trust most are the manipulators. This is simply because they are using your trust for them, against you. Manipulation is when you use sneaky actions to make a person do something that you want. Manipulation is kind of like plotting a plan. In fact, that's exactly what it is. You choose your target and then get them to believe a certain thing in order for them to take action on it. Manipulation is also a very dangerous thing. You can fall into a domino effect of manipulation whilst thinking that you are just doing someone a favor when really you are constantly being tricked into doing something over and over again. It's a slippery slope. You have to be careful with people because you never know when you are being used. Have you ever experienced manipulation?

I think we have all been manipulated in doing both good and bad things. I'm sure as children, your parents manipulated you into eating your vegetables or sitting quietly in services. I have been manipulated in the past into doing things that I didn't want to do, but I try my best every day to listen to my own voice.
ReplyDeleteI feel as if many are manipulated without even knowing it. For instance, once someone asked me why someone was being so annoying that day. I quickly realized that I was being manipulated since they were such good friends with that person. They just wanted to hear what I had to say, and then they were going to go back to that person and just tell them exactly what I had told them. That is the definition of being manipulated by someone in wrongful doing.
ReplyDeleteOne of the most interesting developments from the Truman Show movie is the discovery of the Truman Show Delusion. This delusion occurs when a person believes that they a part of a show and are constantly being watched, like Truman. It can also lead to a sense of distrust in the world, as the person believes that others are manipulating them. The scariest part of the delusion is that it is not possible to outright disprove it. Personally, I do not think I could be in a show because I have traveled to many different locations in my life and I have access to unlimited knowledge through the internet.
