Rosalie Weiss- Week 10- How to Give the Perfect Gift

With the holidays coming up, it may be hard to find the perfect gift, making the wholesome practice of giving to your loved ones feel like a chore. This, however, is not a problem for me, as I like to consider myself a gift-giving pro. From my extensive knowledge on the subject, I intend to give advice that will help even the most hopeless gift giver, give the best gifts this holiday season.
First, you must know what not to get someone. The biggest and most common mistake you can make while gift-giving is giving someone something they already have and just don't need more of. My whole family is guilty of this one, with my dad getting a new frying pan every year, adding to his seemingly endless collection of frying pans that no one will ever use. Gifts like these might seem practical and thoughtful on the surface but are honestly sad excuses for gifts that the giver put little to no thought into (no offense dad,). An easy way to avoid making this mistake is to reflect on what purpose your gift will serve and if your recipient already owns something that serves the same purpose. Another common mistake is feeling that you need to spend the most money, or any money at all, to give the best gifts. As long as you put meaning behind your gift, the cost of it won't matter.
Now that you know what not to give someone, you need to know what to give someone. I believe that there are two types of gifts, personal and practical, with different ways to approach each one. If you want to get someone a practical gift, think about the recipient and reflect on your past conversations. Try and remember if they ever mentioned needing or wanting something and get that for them. Not only will this provide them with something useful, but it will also show them that you care about and listen to them. If you want to get someone a personal gift, think about your inside jokes, things you share, or something only you know about them and get (or make) them something related to that. This gift is extra special as it will show the recipient how much thought you put into it.
The most important thing to remember while gift-giving is as long as your gift comes from the heart, it is the perfect gift.
What is the best gift you have ever given?
