Squid Game
(Spoiler Warning)
In the last nine months, Netflix has gained over 11 and a half-billion dollars in profit (Bowman). How have they made so much? Shows, they have made this much money through shows. One show, in particular, has recently skyrocketed Netflix's view rate. In fact, this show is now the most-watched show on Netflix with
142 million hours watched. The show after this one only has 82 million, so it's a pretty huge margin (Khal). What could this show be?
Squid Game. Squid Game has completely taken over the internet since its release in September. It's a Korean horror/action show with intense and extreme violence, gore, and great amounts of character development. After hearing how good the show is for a whole month and a half, I finally decided to give it a chance. Last week I went on Netflix and put on Squid Game. My friend told me the first episode was a little slow in terms of plot development, but it was still interesting, and that statement held true. The first episode was all about informing the audience on who the character was and is. The protagonist is a poor-divorced father by the name of Seong Gi-hun. He's so poor in fact, that when he meets a sketchy man at the subway, he is fine with going to his "game show" to earn some money. He is told to meet some people at a certain location and time, and funny enough a white van appears. Cliche enough? So he gets in the van and gets knocked out by some mysterious gas that comes through the roof of the car. He wakes up with 455 other people in a room filled with beds, and the workers, soldiers, and managers for the game are all wearing the same suit with specific masks. They then get put into a room where they have to play a children's game: red light, green light. Little do they know they will be murdered if they fail. The winners of the game have the chance to win all of the prize money (40 million dollars) if they complete all of the other games.
That's the basic concept of Squid Game, and I don't want to spoil anymore for your own sake. I really enjoyed watching the show, and I highly recommend it to anyone that can handle some gruesome and evil scenes. There is a season two coming out soon, so binge-watch season one quickly! Will you watch Squid Game? If you have already, how does it compare to other Netflix shows?
I haven’t watched squid game fully through, but I have binged a couple of episodes. After talking with many who have watched the show, it is fascinating to hear how others think of the show. One of my friends told me that the show originally wasn’t approved to be put on Netflix, and one change was made to the show and now it is the most popular show on Netflix. It is crazy how one little change made, can make a show from becoming famous all around the world. Many have been reporting that due to this show’s high popularity, more Korean tv shows will be starring on Netflix. It is very unique to other Netflix shows due to the background of its characters and the concept.
ReplyDeleteI watched Squid games the day it came out. It came out over one of our many September breaks so it gave me the opportunity to binge the show completely in like one or two days. I really liked it when I watched it and I thought the concept of the show was really cool. There are not many shows like this show on Netflix. I am not surprised it did so well on the platform, especially because they translated it to so many languages. I hope season two comes out soon.
