Michael Hakim Week 8 - Staying Motivated in the Gym
When it comes to accomplishing what you want to do, sometimes the hardest thing is to motivate yourself. For me, something I have always struggled with is motivating myself to work out. Until about three months ago, I was never really ever able to motivate myself enough to get in the gym and work out consistently. Ever since July, though, I have worked out consistently, and I am finally seeing results. Today, I will be sharing a few of the things that I feel helped to get me over the hump with motivation.
It all started on my trip I took in the summer, which was a trip around the west coast with a bunch of other teenagers my age. Going into this trip, I hadn’t ever worked out consistently, so I was very skinny. The second night we were there (which was in Arizona), all of the guys decided to go to the hotel gym together for some reason. I decided to join them and tag along, even though I didn’t actively work out.
When we all started working out together, one thing became apparent to me - I was one of the weakest ones there. Seeing this made me feel bad. I also noticed just how much better shape everyone else was in than me. As we finished up the workout, I noticed just how good it felt to get out my energy in the workout. This entire situation, in a way, flipped a switch inside of my head - I was going to start working out consistently.
Ever since this day, I have gained around 6-7 pounds of muscle. Now, I am definitely not a bodybuilder, and I promise I’m not one of those cocky gym chads. But, I am definitely proud of how far I’ve come, and I feel that it is important to give myself the credit I deserve. Eight months ago, I looked and felt completely different, as back then I was struggling with my Crohn’s Disease, which made me lose 25 pounds in the span of two months. When I look back on that time now, I feel grateful that God has blessed me with the strength to push through and to make sure that I get better each and every day.
I still have a lot of progress to make in the gym, and I am nowhere near my dream physique, and every time I go to the gym there’s always someone bigger than me that gives me more motivation. However, I know that if I continue to stay consistent and continue to work as hard as I can each and every day, I can accomplish whatever I put my mind to.
