Michael Hakim Week 9 - Music: An Essential Part of my Life

I love music. Music is something that brings me happiness; when I listen to it, it feels like I am in another world. I am literally listening to music right now while writing this. Today, I will tell you about my love for music, so if you are in the mood to read about my relationship with music, then you’ve come to the right place.

It all started out when I was young, maybe 7 or 8. This is when I started listening to the basic pop music that was popular at the time. Gangnam Style was a banger, not gonna lie. At this time, there was nothing really too special about my music taste, it was very basic, and I was just having fun.

After about age 10, all the way to around age 13, I pretty much had a music drought. I just didn’t have any interest in music. I knew the basic popular songs, but I just didn’t care enough to develop my own taste and to explore different genres. However, this all changed one day in study hall in 7th grade.

I was doing my homework in study hall when I decided to give rap music a try. I didn’t think anything of it at the time, but I was always hearing all my peers listening to it, and I wanted to get in on the hype. I pulled up Spotify on my phone (which is what I was using at the time, now I’m a full-on Apple Music guy) and loaded up Rap Caviar. I remember the first song that played was something by the Migos, but I can’t quite remember which song it was. While listening to the song, I noticed how cool it sounded; the booming bass, the unique sounds, and the fast, lyrical flow of the rappers. I loved it. I continued to listen to more and more songs that year until I realized that this would be my new favorite genre of music.

Ever since this day, I have grown to be a rap addict. I now listen to rap music every day, racking up hundreds of hours of listening time a year. I have now developed a list of my own favorite rappers and my favorite songs from them, instead of strictly going along with what’s popular. I don’t only listen to rap, by the way. I love to change it up with R&B, pop, and even some oldies. To me, music is music, and all music is great.

My love for music has gotten so monumental that I have now started to make my own. As a lot of you know, I make my own beats from scratch. First off, I would like to take the time to apologize for annoying everyone with the constant beats leaking from my AirPods. Now that that’s out of the way, let’s talk about drums. Not physical drums, but digital drums. This is something that I have really developed a passion for and is my favorite part of making beats. My favorite drum instrument is easily the 808 drum, but the hi-hats come close.

Music inspires people. It changes lives and inspires people to be better people. Music has helped me in so many areas of my life, such as working out, uplifting my mood when I’m down, and giving me a new passion. I am so thankful that I am now back into music, and my love for music won’t be disappearing anytime soon.

Question: What kind of music do you like? Why do you like it?

Comments

  1. I listen to a lot of music too. Daily, I probably listen to at least three hours. I listen to mostly any genre of music but I do lean a lot towards alt music. One of my favorite playlists that I have been adding on to is currently at 1,259 songs.

  2. I agree with you that music makes you feel like you are in a different world. It is cool because everyone has their own unique music taste and everyone connects to music differently.

  3. I listen to music all of the time, especially while I am driving. I listen to different kinds of music depending on what mood I am in, and everyone has a different opinion about it.

  4. I listen to music whenever I am doing something that doesnt require full attention: driving, cleaning, and more. I enjoy listening to rap. Recently, I have been really liking Drake and his new album Certified Lover. What are your thoughts on that album release?

  5. It was really interesting to read about how your taste for music has changed as you matured while mine has mostly stayed the same with it just being basely music in foreign languages. I can remember ever since I was a toddler I would sing along to Persian CD's with my mom in the car on our way to school.

  6. Music has recently become a huge part of my life. I find myself kind of depressed whenever I don't listen to music for a long period of time. It's amazing how simple sounds compiled together can really change who you are as a person.
