Maya Garaway Week 10: Fear?
I think I can assume that all of us have a fear. Some are rational and others irrational, but we have all felt scared before. Honestly, this past week has been stressful for me because of a fear of mine, but it gave me inspiration for this blog post, so it's ok! So my question of the week is what exactly is fear?
According to an article, fear is defined as “the anticipation of pain.” First, it is important to separate fear from anxiety. Some of the differences is that anxiety tends to be more internalized and generalized thoughts where fear is specific and immediate. The problem is, fear is still a vague term. We know it's a feeling, but how do you analyze that? What comes first, the feeling or the reaction? Where does fear come from? Fear is a very concept idea and not very defined. A lot of the research is theories and not completely confirmed. There are many different experiments and research done based off of this. Some theories believe that the emotion of fear is first, while others are the opposite. There are also debates of where fear comes from. One explanation comes from the nature vs nurture theory. This one article takes into account the genetics and events that can cause fears. It is said that events that you experience may cause a fear but your genetics will determine how likely you are to develop fears.
Everyone has a different fear, but I believe that it is important to stay brave and try to overcome them. What are some of your fears and how do you overcome them?

One of my biggest fears is getting a shot. It is really funny whenever I say that in front of my mom since she is a doctor. She always makes jokes about it and I always get annoyed, because I consider it a huge fear of mine. To overcome this fear, I stay calm and usually have to involve some bribery with my mom. I say to her, “if I get this shot, then can I get these shoes”. The outcome is usually yes and there I am, going to get the shot.
ReplyDeleteThroughout my whole life, I had a fear of dogs. I did not want any dogs near me, let alone touch me. I got over my fear by staying calm when a dog was near me. A bunch of my friends have dogs so I used their dogs to get over my fear.
ReplyDeleteI have an extreme fear of snakes. I can't even being to describe how scared and freaked out by them I am. Even just seeing a photo gives me the chills. I haven't been able to find a way to deal with it, I just hope I never see one.
ReplyDeleteMy biggest fear is definitely spiders. I honestly don't even know why, all I know is that they are petrifying. I still haven't found a way to overcome this fear, so whenever I see a spider and just try to get away from it as fast as I can.
