Hannah Shinder Week 8- My life after not playing soccer anymore
This year, I have made a hard decision to end my travel soccer experience. Every single second I was always playing soccer. My friends would text me if we could hang out and my answer was always: I can’t, I have soccer. While this was always very frustrating that I couldn’t experience a true weekend teen experience, I enjoyed traveling and doing something I loved. As I got older and soccer became more competitive, I felt that I was missing out on things I couldn’t experience if I continued to play competitive soccer.
Even though I ended a different lifestyle, it has opened my life to new opportunities. I now have the time to try new things. I never have to set my alarm for 6 am workouts on weekends. Now on every Saturday, I coach and teach 2 to 5-year-olds how to play soccer. Not only do I teach them how to kick a ball, but I am also teaching them life and leadership skills even at this young age. Every Saturday morning as I walk onto the field ready to coach, I look back and remember myself in my pink cleats walking up to the field and afraid to put my foot over the line. As I see these 2-year-olds so excited to kick a soccer ball and scream “Coach Hannah!”, I remind myself of the positives in not playing travel soccer anymore and instead, teaching kids from a young age life-long values.
Discussion Question: Is there anything that you have done in life so far that has opened new paths for you as an individual?
It is amazing that you take your soccer skills to encourage and influence toddlers. As interesting as it sounds, math has opened a pathway in life for me. Since I am in AP calculus, I get asked by kids in my community to tutor them. I am given the chance to help them succeed in their math class which is something I enjoy, while getting paid for it.
