Hannah Shinder Week 7- Trip to New York

This past weekend I went to New York after not visiting in 2 years. Through the pandemic, I have been thinking to myself, how has New York been impacted? Well, the time had come and I was heading to New York to answer that question.

When I arrived in New York, the first night started off with a Broadway show which isn’t surprising for my family as that is something we have always loved to do. In fact, we usually don’t see just one show but multiple if we can.  On this trip, we only saw one but it was “To Kill A Mockingbird”. I was amazed at how the whole audience was so engaged and how I forgot I was in a theater. This trip to Broadway was different as everyone needed to show proof of COVID vaccination and we were required to wear our masks the whole time.

Another major change I realized quickly was that so many stores and restaurants I had visited in the past were gone.  In order to eat inside a restaurant in NYC, everyone had to show proof of vaccination. I was shocked at how strict every restaurant was and never once did they not ask. While sitting in one of the restaurants, I saw one person walk in and not have proof of vaccination and he was asked to leave.

Lastly, New York is usually a great place to explore unique stores and shops.  As we walked through our favorite flagship stores, looking at trendy new styles for the season, we were surprised by the limited merchandise even here. I barely found a top and sweater to buy, in a single bag when usually I come out with too many bags to hold.  I realized that the pandemic has affected so many parts of our economy. I realized it will be a while until I hopefully will be back to the old NYC.

Discussion question: Where is your favorite place to travel to and how have they been impacted in the past 2 years?

  1. It's so sad how so many things have changed throughout the pandemic like stores and restuarants closing. My favorite place to travel to is Israel. This past summer and October of last year, I went to Israel. Since both the times I went were during the pandemic, things were very different: we had to quarantine for 14 days and masks were required both inside and outside. When I went in October of last year, everything was closed: malls, all closed stores, restaurants and everything except for the beach . Even then, the only way you were allowed to go to beach was if you were running or doing any physical activities.

  2. I went to New York over the summer. When I went, they did not yet put vaccine mandates in place, but masks were still required. It was very sad that so many of the places that I was looking forward to going to were not the same. For example, I really wanted to see a Broadway show, but they did not yet open the theaters back in August.

  3. I went to New York for the first time since I was 4 years old this summer. Things weren't very strict with covid19 but I remember having to wear a mask on the subway. I really want to go back!
