Ben Nikpour - Week 11: I Got My Driver's License Last Week

The other day, Mrs. Ho had us analyze the song Good 4 You by Olivia Rodrigo. Immediately after listening to the video, I was reminded of another song, Rodrigo's debut single and probably her most notable song, Driver’s License. The opening line for Driver’s License goes, “I got my driver's license last week.” Not only is this a very catchy line, but, for me, this is also a true statement. Last week I received my driver's license. After over a year of practicing driving with my permit, I was able to pass my driving test on my first try!

I left school early to go to the DMV to take my test. The sweat dripped down my forehead as I stood impatiently in the long line for driving tests. Although I think I am a great driver, I was not confident in my ability to pass the test. Fortunately, I only made very few mistakes, so I passed and received my driver's license. Currently, I am sixteen years old meaning, in Florida, I could have my license. In New Jersey, where I am from, you only receive your permit at sixteen and your license at seventeen. If I still lived in New Jersey, I would still not have my license like the rest of my home friends. Since I moved to Florida after the age of fifteen and needed to have my permit for over a year, I received my license a few months after I turned sixteen. Either way, I am glad to be able to drive.

If I am being completely honest, I am not entirely happy that I have my license. Don’t get me wrong, I am ecstatic to have the opportunity to drive on my own, but I have a little fear of driving on the road. If I have learned one thing from driving here in Boca, it's that Boca drivers are not very good ones. Some of the drivers here are crazy; I am not sure how some people have not gotten into an accident yet! The part of driving that scares me the most is shifting lanes. Sometimes crazy drivers speed by out of nowhere, while other times I just get stuck because I cannot find a way to change into the neighboring lane. One drive that I do not have to worry about changing lanes is the drive to and from school. The school drive is a relief for me, and I am not too worried about driving to school and back. Hopefully, I grow out of my fear as I drive more and become a better driver.

Driver's License

Do you have your driver’s license, and do you find driving scary?

Comments

  1. I have my license and do get scared sometimes. This is mostly because I live on a street where a lot of bikes like to ride on the road instead of in their lane so I have to be extra cautious to not hit them.
