Atara Berkower - Week 11- Chanukah during the year

  Chanukah during the year

Chanukah is here, and it is earlier than usual! Chanukah is my favorite time of the year because it is an eight-day long holiday. Each night I celebrate the holiday in the best ways. I always go to the parties that my Synagogue throws, spend family time lighting the Chanukiah, and eat latkes and donuts. On the first night of Chanukah, I went to the beach to watch fireworks and eat jelly donuts. It was a perfect day and activity to welcome in the first night. When I got home, I lit the candles with my family. That concludes the first night that welcomed in the holiday.

The second night of Chanukah, my friends came over and we went swimming and made sugar cookies! I have never made sugar cookies before this, and now, I will always stick to making them. I did not think they were going to come out tasty because of the lack of baking skills I have, but I can confidently say that they were the best sugar cookies I have ever eaten. I concluded the night by lighting candles with my family. I plan on celebrating the rest of the nights in a fun way to keep the holiday going.

I love when Hanukkah falls early because it gives me a fun and exciting week while I have school. We have fun activities in school and get excused from class when we do activities. When Hanukkah falls on winter break, we do not get to celebrate in school. This year Chanukah falls at the perfect time of year.

What do you do to celebrate Chanukah? Do you like when it falls on winter break or on a school week?

  1. Chanukah is one of my favorite Jewish holidays. Even though it seems like a lot of repetition each year, since we do pretty much the same thing: light the candles, get presents, and have dinner. I love when it falls on winter break because then I get to spend it with my entire family since that is a time each year that we are always together. We get to give presents to each other and enjoy the festive holiday meals.

  2. To celebrate Hannukah, my family lights the menorah every night for the eight nights and sings the important Hannukah prayer that goes with it and opens up presents. I like when it falls on a school week rather than in Winter break because Winter break is already filled with fun and seeing family so you are already in the fun spirit, but during the week theres school and everything so it is a great time to have it because you always have something to look forward to during the day at school for those eight days.

  3. I love celebrating Chanukah! Most years I have one big celebration with all my family and then celebrate each night with my inner family. I prefer when the holiday is in late December. I don't have a good reason for wanting it in late December, I just like the 'vibe' of a Chanukah in the winter (mostly because it would snow during this time when I lived in New Jersey.

  4. This year my family and I went to my aunt's house to celebrate the first night of Hanukkah and the second night we went to a Hanukkah party and it was so much fun. I love Hanukkah because I get to spend time with my family and because I love giving people gifts. I like when Hanukkah is before winter break because we get to enjoy all of the fun activities that the school plans for all the eight days of Hanukkah.
