Rosalie Weiss- 5- A Review of the Pretty Bad Show Pretty Smart
After learning that ex Disney stars Emily Osment and Gregg Sulkin would be starring in a Netflix show together called Pretty Smart, I was pretty excited. While watching the first episode, I became pretty disappointed.
The show follows Chelsea (Emily Osment), a smart girl forced to move in with her peppy sister Claire (Olivia Macklin) after getting dumped by her long-time boyfriend. Claire, along with her three roommates, try to help her move on and adapt to life in Los Angeles. These roommates include personal trainer and Claires ex-boyfriend Grant (Gregg Sulkin), social media influencer Jayden (Michael Hsu Rosen), and healer crystal girl Solana (Cinthya Carmona). Chelsea's attraction to Grant is noticeable in the first episode. This creates an awkward love triangle as Grant is still not over Claire.
Most of the show’s jokes are just a character saying something dumb or Chelsea making an obscure reference to something only smart people would understand, followed by a laugh track. Laugh tracks are annoying when they follow good jokes, but when they follow every mildly humorous sentence, can ruin a show. I believe that is what happened here. The plot is fine, the writing is okay, but the laugh track makes the show almost unwatchable.
Something positive about the show is how likable everyone except Chelsea is. They seem like a nice group of friends that support each other and are just genuinely good people. Chelsea sucks. She acts like she is above her sister and her sister's friends after they kindly opened their home to her. She is supposed to be the relatable character but is honestly just annoying and embarrassing.
I probably wouldn’t recommend this show to people as it had nothing that made it stick out from the many sitcoms there are out there. It feels like a satire making fun of basic sitcoms, which is bad because I don't think it was supposed to be one. The show could have been good if it just removed the laugh track and Chelsea’s character.
Did you watch this show?
I was in between shows the other night so I was looking for something new to watch and thought it was interesting. I was excited because I love both Emily Osment and Gregg Sulkin and I could not get through the first episode, especially because of the laugh track.
