With winter on the horizon, sports are starting. My school (DKJA) has two major sports starting soon: basketball and soccer. I'm currently a junior (11th grade), and during my freshman/first year of high school, I participated in soccer; however, I was quickly injured with a jammed thumb at our first game. In my sophomore year of high school, I joined the j.v basketball team, but because of the COVID-19 outbreak, we were only able to play four games. This year, the schedule is back to as it was before. I can't wait for the season to officially begin.

This week, the three coaches are hosting the DKJA j.v and varsity basketball tryouts. I already completed the first day of tryouts yesterday (Monday), so now there are three more days left. Monday wasn't too bad at all. We did all conditioning, and that includes sprints, incline push-ups, dips, and a two-mile run under 10 minutes. When we did sprints, I felt great. I came in the top three spots every time, but to be honest, I strive for first every time. I wasn't tired at all after the sprints, so I was ready for what was coming. Next up was a two-mile run, and I finished with a time of under ten minutes. I came in third place, so it's safe to say I'm consistent. I feel like I completed all of these very well, and I was actually impressed with myself, but not satisfied as I always want to be better. The credit for my performance goes to my determination; I NEED to be better. I go for runs, do weight lifting, basketball drills, and play pickup games on a daily basis. If I keep this up, I am confident I will secure a spot on the varsity lineup.

What do you feel most determined towards? Are you willing to sacrifice everything to be the best at it?

  1. I feel most determined to get better in the gym. I still struggle sometimes to be consistent, but I have sacrificed a lot to continuously get in there and lift weights. However, I feel like I could be better, and I need to start working out more than 4 days a week, which is what I am currently doing.

  2. I am excited to watch the varisity DKJA basketball team defeat other teams and win! That practice seems tiring but it is worth it if you love basketball. I am determined to play tennis and go to the gym. I try to go 6 days a week, although things always come up and ruin my schedule.

  3. That determination is a great quality, as it helps you push yourself to be better and better. I can't wait to watch some games this season
