Maya Garaway Week 4: Stuck in My Head

Personally, music is a big part of my day. During my morning drive to school, the playlist that I listen to normally affects my mood. I have many playlists and even more songs saved throughout them. Yet, it is normally only a handful of songs that will be stuck in my head throughout the day, and sometimes in worse cases, throughout the week. This leads to my question of why are some songs capable of being stuck in your head?

A research study in 2017 was able to answer this question. In this study, the researchers interviewed three thousand people and asked what is their most frequent earworm. From the results, the researchers studied the similarities between the songs. They were able to find that the songs that become earworms tend to be faster, easier to sing, and share a similar pattern. The studies also explained that it is more likely for a person to get a song stuck in their head under certain conditions as well. Those conditions include if someone is constantly listening to music, feeling stressed, dissociating, or if they simply have heard a good song.

Luckily enough, there are ways to get rid of an earworm! The articles suggested multiple methods including distracting yourself with a different song, listening to the song all the way through, or chewing a piece of gum!

Thankfully this article gave me the answers I was looking for and will help the next time I am cursed with an unwanted song stuck in my head. What has been the longest amount of time that a song has been stuck in your head and what was the song?

  1. Songs get stuck in my head for long periods of time. I don't mind it when it is a song I like but it gets annoying when it is a song I dislike.
