Hannah Shinder Week 4- Need A Movie To Watch?
This past week I watched one of my favorite movies ever about something I have been following my whole life since I have a huge passion for soccer. It was a movie called LFG which is about the US Women’s Nationals Soccer Team and their fight for equal pay. In the movie, the players who are on the team including Megan Rapinoe, Alex Morgan, Jessica McDonald, Becky Sauerbrunn, Kelley O'Hara, Sam Mewis, and occasionally others as well speak about how they feel and how they have been overcoming this challenge of equal pay.
In the movie, especially Rapino and Morgan show their expression and how they feel towards their pay compared to others. They show graphics of how the team would talk before each game and what their goal was from the games. Their goal before every game was to of course win, but more to show the federation that they are deserving of higher pay than what they are currently receiving. Instead of protesting and not playing in games, the team had instead decided to play and show that they are worthy and deserving of getting paid more and equal. After the whistle blew at the start of the game, the players would always say to themselves, “get the job done, LFG” and always would achieve their goal. An example of this which is presented in the movie is the World Cup in 2019. For example, for qualifying for the World Cup, the men got $2,500,000, while the women got $750,000. This is a huge difference and the women’s team has become fed up with it and is demanding for a change to occur.
I feel as if the pay between the women’s and men’s national teams is not fair as well, just like how the players and many others are also feeling. It is proven that there is no reason as to why the men should get paid more just for even showing up to a game, while the women’s team is working hard and is winning, but is still getting paid less.
This movie looks super interesting! I know from my sister, and her love of basketball, that the WNBA players make way less money than the NBA player's. Just another example of the inequality of pay between men and women. It is extremely unfair, and not right in general. Women should not be given less money if they are doing the same work as men, or if they are working as hard and for as much time as men do. Do you know of any specific reasons that cause this?
