Ben Nikpour- Week 6: Boo! A Game of Trick or Treat
Halloween is one of my favorite holidays of the year. The blow-up monsters and lights on the front yard of all the houses in the neighborhood get me so excited. Halloween is not a one-day holiday to me. It is a holiday like Christmas in which you prepare for it weeks in advance. Growing up, the second I saw October on the calendar, I knew it was Halloween time. Shows on all the television channels would turn to Halloween-themed episodes, and I do not think anyone could forget Disney Monstober. What got me really excited was getting into my costume and going over to my friend's house to go trick or treating. Everyone has their own Halloween traditions like binging all your favorite Halloween shows and movies, making Halloween desserts, going to a fun dress-up party, decorating the front yard, or simply going trick or treating on Halloween day. My favorite tradition would have to be Booing!
Booing is a game of trick or treat where you attempt to leave a bag of candy in front of a friend's door, ring the doorbell, and run away before you get caught. If completed successfully, the person you booed will have no idea who just left the bag of candy at their doorstep. In New Jersey, where I am from, this game was played by almost every child in town. Our parents would drive us from house to house with one or two of our friends to go and play this game. I do not know if this game is played in Florida like it was in my hometown. When I asked people about booing here, most people looked at me like I was crazy. I assume some people in Boca played this game when they were younger.
Although this is considered a game for children, my friends and I decided it would be fun to play this at least one more time before we graduate high school. It is much different now. For one, we are much older than we were the last time we played. Booing is also very different now with the installations of Ring Doorbell. Now that most people have a Ring Doorbell, you cannot even get close to the house before the owner receives an alert. Everything is also on video. Right after we thought we successfully got away from a friend's house, we would get an embarrassing text from them with a video of us running to and from their house.
Booing will always be my favorite Halloween tradition, even if it is not the same as when we were younger. I hope that this game will be passed down from generation to generation so children will have the same experience and fun I had when I was younger.

Have you ever heard of this game? If so, have you ever gone Booing?
I have never heard of this before! I love the idea, though. My Halloween tradition (aside from eating all of the candy before the day even arrives, so I have buy more every single year) is just watching the silly Halloween-type movies. This year, I've been watching Muppet Haunted Mansion over and over!
ReplyDeleteIve never played this game but it sounds fun. I do remember monstober. It was definitely the best time to watch Disney Chanel.
