Week 6- The Importance of Learning How To Write

10/25/2021

I've been learning how to write now for 11 years, and I'm really thankful that I've been able to get somewhat good at it; because from what I hear, It's an important skill to have.

Since kindergarten, we've been learning how to write in a very specific way, in a standard form. We have Independent clauses, dependent clauses, and sentence fragments, each of which carrying its own weight. However, is it really necessary to write using these formulas for writing sentences? A clue from our presidents may tell a different story. It must be noted that there is a difference between writing a paper that is to be read to individual persons, as opposed to one that is to be read to a crowd. This delineation is especially important for a class centered around rhetoric. I’d like to posit that perhaps it’s more important to learn how to write in this second way- in front of a crowd- than in the former. People who have the ability to arouse a crowd to convince them of their point- persuasion- have the world at their fingers.

The US presidents throughout history have shown this. Back in the late 1700s, presidential speech-writing was at its apex. Over the centuries, it has been shown that the simpler the language of the presidential candidate, the more likely they are to win the election. This likely has something to do with the familiarity people feel when hearing this language, and the speaker’s ability to simplify complex processes and lengthy information. Maybe it’s time to flip the script and start focusing more on writing in a way that keeps people awake, as opposed to one that puts people to sleep.

  1. I think that writing is very important and I agree with the last sentence. It is definitely way more fun to know that you have written a sentence or a piece of writing that interests someone over something that may put them to sleep. I also think that there are many different forms of writing and some are boring, so we have to deal with it and try to stay awake.

  2. It is definitely important to make your writing engaging, otherwise what's the point? While you're right about presidential speeches for the general public, I'm a big fan of the long, detailed, sophisticated sort instead. I know, you're shocked! Regardless of which sort of writing you're working on, I'm glad to hear that you're at least thinking about it. YAY RHETORIC!
