Ben Heller Week 5- TikTok Trends

 Week 5- TikTok Trends

October 18, 2021

It’s amazing to me how many people can get immersed in tiktok trends and songs. For example, right now a lot of people that I’ve seen, both on TikTok and in person, have started tracking the “bones” and “no bones” day on TikTok, a trend where a creator checks to see whether or not his pug will stand up or slouch back into its bed. All this stuff is funny and cool, but at a certain point, these trends and songs can get annoying. One of my friends (who will not be named) keeps listening to a TikTok song (even though he doesn’t have TikTok) and it makes me crazy.

On the brightside, people who wouldn’t otherwise have had a platform now get to draw attention to social and societal issues worldwide. For example, when the conflict was happening between Israel and Gaza last May, a lot of people took to TikTok to share their opinions. Unfortunately, just like other social media trends, activism can fall into this category… People can get very heated about social issues when these issues reach their apex, but after a few months pass, people seem to forget. It’s important that we pay attention to whom we give our likes and our attention on social media, and not just get swept away by the tide of trends.

  1. Up until this week in class, I never heard about the "bones" or "no bones" trend, so thank you for that. You make a very valid point that many influencers use their platforms to sometimes spread misinformation, and they become a credible source in their follower's eyes. (ethos)
