Pixar to the mature eye
Disney has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Whenever I think of Disney I always imagine a cute talking mouse and a shimmering princess castle, but Disney has evolved and become so much more than a bunch of fairytales and magic. As I'm maturing and growing older I am starting to realize the meaning behind these family oriented animations.
I have noticed that many award winning Pixar movies like Inside Out and WALL-E, are not only cute cartoons, but also secret PSAs that reflect on our world today. This is a bit confusing and hard to understand when just typing out the facts, so let me break this down movie by movie.
First, Inside Out. Inside Out is one of my favorite Pixar movies as it pertains to adventure, humor, and love. Now that I have gotten older, I understand the real story that Inside Out is presenting to the mature eye. Inside Out is really a movie showing what goes through the mind of a teenager going through change and mental obstacles. The main character, Riley, moves to California and faces the standard teenage struggles of making friends, fitting in, and trying to be happy while life changes more and more everyday. Two of Riley's emotions, Joy and Sadness, get trapped outside of headquarters, so Riley's happiness and sadness suddenly disappears. Fear, Anger, and Disgust are the only other emotions left in headquarters to control Riley, so her life kind of turns sideways after Joy and Sadness get lost. Getting used to the change of moving is hard enough as it is, and now without Joy and Sadness, Riley forgets how to feel and starts to become depressed. Pixar does a phenomenal job showing what depression feels like in our minds. This movie is a message to society telling us that it is okay to not be okay.
The award winning film, WALL-E, may seem like a cute sci-fi movie with robots, but it is actually a wake up call from Disney. The message Pixar is putting out through this film is presented through the people that live in the futuristic utopia that WALL-E takes place in. All of the people in WALL-E are obese and practically glued to their screens. They do not know what real social interaction is and the have terrible health. Disney is trying to tell us that if we do not learn how to control technology and how it affects us, than this utopia will soon become reality and humans will forget how to communicate and will no longer take care of their bodies.

I think that the way Pixar designs their movies are great. not only do you get to watch a movie, but you are also learning life lessons. Honestly, I target all of the Pixar movies directly to kids, because they can learn while doing something they enjoy most at such a young age.
ReplyDeleteI love Inside Out too! I just rewatched it a few weeks ago! It definitely teaches a good lesson that is appropriate for more mature viewers and young kids. I haven't watched WALL-E yet, but I will have to sometime soon.
ReplyDeletePixar movies are always so good! A lot of people can relate to them and they are interesting.
