Maya Garaway Week 2: The Petty Color War

Have you ever been in the middle of an argument and thought to yourself, “wow, this is really petty.” Well, Stuart Semple and Anish Kapoor take the meaning of “petty” to a whole new level!

The story begins in 2016 when Anish Kapoor bought the rights to the color, Vantablack. This was the blackest black and he would not allow anyone else to use it. This caused a lot of arguments between artists, but one person specifically arose to fight Kapoor, Stuart Semple. Semple became annoyed with Kapoor and in response, he created the Pinkest Pink. This pink is available at a very cheap price and is available to anyone… except Anish Kapoor. When you buy this product, you must agree to the terms and conditions which include “you are not Anish Kapoor, you are in no way affiliated to Anish Kapoor, you are not purchasing this item on behalf of Anish Kapoor or an associate of Anish Kapoor. To the best of your knowledge, information,
and belief this paint will not make its way into that hands of Anish Kapoor.”

Kapoor did not like that, which brings us to Kapoor's response! Somehow, he managed to get his hands on the World's Pinkest Pink and posted a picture of his middle finger dipped into the color. This deeply upset Semple, so he retaliated in a few different ways. First, he tracked down where Kapoor bought the pink from and wrote a letter discussing ways to resolve the issue. One of the terms included in the letter is “Mr. Kapoor would give me my PINK back. I don't want him to have it.” Secondly, Semple created a new product, The Glitteriest Glitter. This glitter is made of glass and is purposefully sharp. The reason for this is so Kapoor would not be able to stick his middle finger into it. Lastly, Semple now runs a store that sells very vivid colors for cheap prices. He makes products including the World's Blackest Black, the Worlds Greenest Green, and more. There is a catch though, under each product you must acknowledge the same terms and conditions as before such as confirming that you are not Anish Kapoor.

The more I look into this argument, the more obviously petty it becomes. I find it funny and almost ridiculous the extent of this argument. This argument is still ongoing because Kapoor still exclusively owns Vantablack and Semple continues releasing products. I do find the events quite entertaining to follow. It does leave me with some questions though, could this have been solved another way and how could two grown adults be this petty?

  1. I hate being in an argument where the other person is petty. Two grown adults should not be this upset about colors.

  2. This is beyond petty. That being said, it makes me so happy to read about any new developments in the feud. While I clearly take Stuart Semple's side, the whole thing is completely ridiculous! It's like something that one would read about in some absurd novel!
