Hannah Shinder- Week 2- Another Step In Life

Throughout your life as you grow as a person, there are many steps taken to maturity. One important step that I believe is part of the steps to maturity is getting your driver's license. I believe that it is the path to a whole new world. This is because my parents don’t need to be my driver to wherever I need to be, I have more freedom because I can go whenever I want somewhere, and many more reasons.

On the other hand, it can also be very challenging from a parents perspective of their kid getting their driver's license. The parents have to make the decision if they want to buy their kid a new car, give them an existing car from the family, or not get them a car at all. In addition, your insurance goes up and there is a lot of reliability and trust that your kid will be safe. Luckily my mom is able to rely on me and I was fortunate with a car that she had bought for me.

During the drivers test, I was in complete shock at how they tested you in order to get your license. It was so quick and easy and I was in and out of the DMV in 30 minutes. The steps I had to do on the test were to make a turn and make sure that I had my signal on, park the car, a three point turn, accelerate and then slam on the brakes, and back up 50 feet. I went with my mom and she was in complete shock because she was telling me that on her driver's test, she had to go on the highway and make challenging turns. I couldn’t believe why I was so nervous before I went to take the test, but it was probably because I was just sitting there waiting for my number to be called while hearing everyone else get called and not me.

Discussion Question: What do you think about the way they test you to get your driver's license in Florida?

  1. I am so thankful that the Florida driver's test is easy because I'm still trying to parallel park perfectly. To be perfectly honest, I think the test in Florida is almost too easy because there are so many bad drivers on the road. Also, I don't know why they make you say to turn off the ignition when you leave your car because isn't it assumed that you do that?

  2. Hannah, I agree with your point about how having a kid and seeing them drive is scary. I also agree with how you treat driving as a huge responsibility and privilege. But I have something to say about the driver's test. You said it was super easy and quick; you got in and out of the DMV in only 30 minutes! I don't like the fact that this also happened to me when getting my license. Having it this easy means dangerous drivers are more likely to be on the road, and that probably explains why Florida has some of the worst drivers with one of the highest accident rates.

  3. The Florida driver's test is so much easier than it was when I got my license. I recognize that there aren't a TON of places where you need to parallel park, but it is still an important skill to have. I agree with Ori that maybe there's a correlation between the ease of getting a Florida license and the number of bad drivers out there. My kids, though, were really happy at how easy the test is!
