Michael Hakim Week 2 - Fantasy Football - A Much Needed Rush of Energy

It's that time of year again - football season! To me, this is one of the best times of the year. Not only will I be able to watch Tua Tagovailoa turn into a star with the new and improved Dolphins team, but I will also get to participate in multiple fantasy football leagues, which, to me, is the most fun part.

Now, I have never been the best at fantasy football. In fact, last year, I came in at second-to-last in my league. However, the rush of energy that this simple, casual game provides me and millions of other sports fans across the world with, is sometimes unmatched.

First off, for those of you who aren't the most familiar with fantasy football, it is basically a game that includes players in a virtual league (usually anywhere from four to 16 people but there can be more). The players then participate in a draft, which involves choosing the players that you want on your team. These players are real-life players from the NFL, and you are choosing them based on how well you think they are going to perform during the football season. The players then go head to head with each other every week, making trades and trash talking along the way. There is usually a cash prize that is awarded to the winner of the league, which further adds to the excitement.

I know this sounds simple - which it is - but, there is an energy this game provides that is just so fun. What makes it the most fun, however, is the trash-talking. There is nothing better than beating your friend's team and coming to school the next day to then proceed to talk some trash. There is also something so captivating about being able to feel like, in a sense, an actual general manager of an NFL team. As the season goes on, you begin to develop a deep connection to your players, in a way. For example, there are some players like Darren Waller who I have drafted on my teams every year since 2019, which is when I started. When you have someone good on your fantasy team, you become a fan of them, which opens up your options of who to root for even more.

Fantasy football is something that is always there for you. Whenever you are having a bad day, fantasy is enough to turn your day around. Sitting down on the couch on a Sunday afternoon to watch six straight hours of Redzone. Whenever you are having a stressful day full of homework and tests, it is always nice to take a break with fantasy football. It always provides you with a great boost of energy to boost through whatever you are struggling with.

Though I have only talked a little bit about fantasy football in this post, I hope you can now understand even a little bit why everyone goes so crazy over this simple game. It's not too late to start your own league either!

P.S. - If you do start one, let me know (I'll join).

Discussion Question: Do you play fantasy football? If so, have you ever won your league, and how good are you?

  1. I love fantasy sports! I'm terrible at making picks. Truly. It is so much fun, though, to follow your players and see how they do. I haven't played in a few years (aside from March Madness brackets, which is much less detailed and which I still always lose miserably), but I used to have a fantasy football league and a couple different fantasy baseball teams.
