Ben Heller Week 2- School Is Weird

September 13, 2021

With all the holidays coming and going in September, the beginning of school is kind of dizzying. We’re supposed to keep up with all of our learning and be able to recall things from what seems like 50 years ago, but that’s hard. Being in and out of school repeatedly, consequently, is not conducive to learning. How am I supposed to do well on a test when the last time I had the class was a week ago? What are we to do when it just so happens that we don’t have certain classes scheduled for a week because of the weird schedule?

I think that the month of September should be a month of introduction and light work, because it’s hard to get anything done during this time. For instance, today I was getting headaches all day because all this school stuff was just punching me in the face. An added factor to this, is that we’ve been out of normal school for a year and a half. We’ve gone through zoom school, through getting grades that we (sometimes) weren’t used to and learning from the house all day. We also had shorter schedules because even the administration knew we couldn’t pay attention for that long. Now we’re just expected to start again and pretend like nothing happened? That seems like a big oversight. It almost seems rude that we’d get tests our first week of class, and then be catapulted into long, overbearing AP curricula. Everyone needs a second to catch their breath, and between COVID and this spinning month of September, no one’s getting what they need. And that’s a shame. And that’s not going to end well.

  1. Ben, I totally agree with you. September is usually a month with a good amount Jewish holidays, but this September is different. We usually have the breaks spread out in September and October, but this year we have almost all of the holidays during the hectic month of September. School work isn't helping out with all of this chaos, and adding to all of this, my birthday falls on Yom Kippur. I empathize and agree with you Ben.

  2. It definitely is weird to be back in school after being virtual for such a long time. I am still adjusting to the regular schedule, but the day is longer than my old virtual schedule. Hopefully, everyone will adjust well once the holidays are over.

  3. Hi! Your AP English teacher here. You know, the one who has purposely made the month of September pretty chill as far as work goes.... I do understand what you're saying, though. With the format of my class and the amount I was able to cover last year, I made the determination that I could stretch out my "first 2 weeks" lessons to stretch over most of September before we really get into the meat of it. That being said, there is so much to cover in an AP class (especially one like APUSH or Chem, where it's more than learning techniques and how to apply them) and not enough time to cover it. We know that you've not had real school in a long time, but that just means that it's more imperative to jump right into the work in those more concrete classes.

  4. I agree that it is weird to get back into the school schedule, but I don't think we've had that much work yet. I think there is a lot but nothing that wasn't expected from AP classes.

  5. I totally agree. This month of school has been pretty weird so far, but I think that the work load hasn't been too harsh, at least for my classes. The long gaps in between classes have been difficult to navigate through, but I feel like once this crazy month of holidays passes we will be able to get back into the groove of in-school learning.
