Adi Chaham week 2 - Window or Aisle?

You know that feeling when you're at the airport and you get your boarding pass. You're really hoping for that aisle or window seat or that middle seat. But I hope I can speak for most of us and say that the middle seat sucks.  But then you look at your boarding pass and find out you got the middle seat. The disappointment just rushed through you and you now have a few hours to prepare for the WORST FLIGHT EVER! And the beginning to the best trip of your life is definitely not starting now!

Now let's break it down. Everyone has their preferences as to which one they prefer. It's clear they both have ups and downs of their spots on a plane. But, after all, all we want is to be comfortable when traveling.

When you have a window seat, not only are you able to look out the window and see the most beautiful view of the sky and wherever you are departing and arriving from but, you are also able to have a comfortable...well, I can't say comfortable but a more comfortable place to rest on making it easier for some people to fall asleep. Also, I feel that when you sit in the window you have more privacy overall: people don't pass you every second and you can watch whatever you want in peace. And the most important, people don’t ask you to get up every second (like they do when you sit in the aisle).

However, just like everything in life, there are ups and downs; Although you're not woken up by others, you certainly do need to wake up others when needing to use the bathroom which could be annoying when asking strangers who are really focused on the movie they are watching or are in a deep sleep. Let’s not forget about the fact that when there's a pretty view, people in your row will most likely ask you to take a picture for them or will lean on you to take a picture which could get weird if you don't know who they are. I think the most disturbing part about sitting in a window is if the person behind you puts their foot in your area which is an invasion of privacy. Nowadays, as you know, masks are required to wear at all times on a flight and if you need to speak to the flight attendant while sitting at the window, yelling is required unless of course, you are just a loud person.

Now let's talk aisle. The good parts: you can use the bathroom, take a stretch or call the flight attendant whenever without bothering others or waking people. If you’re someone who needs stuff from the overhead bin often, then the aisle seat is perfect for you because you have easy access. Let's not forget about the fact that when sitting in the aisle seat you have more leg room because you can put your leg out; If you're late, no one has to get up for you and you're the first to get out of the aircraft.

Now, here are the downsides of the aisle seat: Others will wake you up or climb over you if they need the bathroom. And you don't have privacy and everyone can see what you're watching. Moreover, it's not very comfortable sleep-wise and you don't have a view. However, for me, I think the worst of all is that you need to make sure your under-seat bag is under your seat. If it's not, someone will step on it or the flight attendant will wake you up. Moreover, when the fight attendants move the cart between the rows, they might wake you up because you might be in their way.  And finally, when people are walking along the aisle and all of a sudden lean on you, putting their hand on your headrest because there is turbulence or they just feel like doing it.

What do you guys prefer? Aisle? Window? Or middle (if you're crazy)? Would you mind sitting in the middle seat?

Comments

  1. The past couple times I have flown, I sat in the aisle seat. I remember last time I flew sitting in the aisle seat I spent a majority of the time looking around the person next to me to see through their window. The person kept looking at me like I was crazy because they were a stranger thinking I was looking at them. Also I fell asleep and I was leaning into the aisle because I didn't want to lean towards the person next to me (for covid purposes) and I got hit in the face by the flight attendant pushing that cart down the aisle. I like the aisle for the convenience and during COVID times but normally I would rather have the window seat.

  2. I am always a window person, though I now have to sit in the middle when we fly. I'm the kind of person who lets people I care about have the better seat, but then I'm miserable for the flight. I just try to tune out all the annoying stuff with music or a tv show/movie.

  3. I used to be a window person because not only did I have a nice view, but I also had a place to put my head when trying to rest and no one really disturbs me when they need to use the restroom. That stuff is great an all but the awkwardness of needing to wake someone up when you need to go to the bathroom is just terrible. In order to avoid that awkwardness I tend to try to sit in the aisle seat so I don't bother anyone when needing to get out of my seat. I'm also pretty small so I don't normally need to get out of my seat when the passenger next to me needs to use the restroom. I just need to lift my legs up and they can get through easily. So I guess I'm kind of in the middle (not the middle seat though, that sucks). I like being able to rest my head and have my own privacy, but having space and not needing to be a disturbance to the passengers next to me is definitely a plus.
