Leah Week 1 - The Lessons We Can Learn From Children
I worked at the Levis JCC over the summer as a counselor for six and seven year old girls and I already miss them all so much.
To be honest, I was really nervous before my first day. I had all these doubts about if this was even going to be a good summer and if I should have gone to sleep away camp instead, but I ended up loving every minute of being a counselor.
I spent most of my summer with these girls and not much time with other teenagers, but it was the most incredible experience. Children view the world in such a happy light and I am so grateful I had the opportunity to view the world from their eyes this summer. They just enjoy the little things in life, which is something that I think most adults and teens should take more time to do more often.
One of the amazing things about children is how they love you no matter what. Teenagers are unfortunately often very judgemental, but children just aren’t. My campers adored me and always wanted to hug me. Children don't care what grades you get, or if you're wearing makeup or not, they just love you.
Another remarkable thing that I noticed about my campers is how much they care about each other. If one girl was upset for any reason, they would all do everything they could to make her happy again. I don’t know if this applies to all children, but it definitely applied to my campers.
We sometimes make the mistake of thinking that younger people should always learn from older people, but occasionally, it’s just the other way around! Have you ever noticed these qualities in children?
First, I think it was a great point to mention that we need to focus and learn not only from the elderly, but also from our youth. I agree with your idea to learn something from kids, because you should be able to learn something from everybody and kids always teach great lessons like the ones you mentioned above. It's important to not care about what people are wearing or what they are doing, but to just care about them.
