Ben Reihanian, Week 1: Iridescent Clouds and the Beauty of Our Everyday Lives

Iridescent Clouds and the Beauty of Our Everyday Lives

When scrolling through TikTok one day, I came across a video by Hank Green in which he reacts to a video where these people are looking out the window and they see something in the sky. It’s like a rainbow but it isn't and it's sort of a cloud but sort of not. It's the magical phenomenon of Cloud Iridescence or Irisation. The colors seen far out into the sky resemble those when looking at the light refraction in a bubble or when oil surfaces in some kind of pool of water. This anomaly is fairly common and it is most often seen in specific kinds of clouds. The emitted can either be pastel or vivid, similar to mother of pearl. Irisations were named after the Greek goddess Iris, goddess of rainbows. This phenomenon occurs when small water droplets or ice crystals individually scatter light in a precise, peculiar way. Colors are seen when these droplets or crystals are all the same uniform size and when the cloud is optically thin. Thin meaning it is either semi-transparent or close to the edge of the cloud.
The video caught my attention because who would’ve thought that there was such a thing as rainbow clouds? It just sounds so surreal and it also just looks so phenomenal. It just really proved to me how little I really know about the world I live in and how much I want to know more. It made me appreciate my environment so much more especially when driving down Loxahatchee in the mornings on my way to school. I looked outside and I noticed the beauty of the clouds and the golden sunlight shining through. The swamp to my left, which I had used to think of as gross and very ugly, was now so intriguing. The world is so beautiful and in every facet, there's something to discover. Tomorrow, wake up excited to see what’s new around you. What else is hiding out there?

Here are some prime examples of it happening:

  1. Those images are beautiful. I will now take my long drives to school as a scenic ride. One morning after a rainy day, I witnessed a beautiful rainbow incorporating some of my favorite colors!

  2. This is truly amazing! You mentioned that you feel like you don't know enough about the world, so what do you think you can do to learn more about it?
