Adam Sobel (Week 1) - How Disney Ruined Star Wars
In October 2012, Disney bought Lucasfilm and forever changed the future of the Star Wars. Star Wars is a franchise started by George Lucas about intergalactic space wars, a fight with inherent good and inherent evil, and mystical powers surrounded by something called the Force. George Lucas built the franchise and made 6 movies, 2 TV series, and one animated movie before selling the franchise, which would be the worst ending for the franchise.
After buying Star Wars, Disney attempted to make its own trilogy of Star Wars movies starting with Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, which was a horrible beginning to the new direction of the franchise. It was essentially a copy of the first trilogy made by George Lucas, where a corrupt government attempts to make a base that can destroy planets with a powerful laser and a small group of rebels work together to destroy the base. Even worse is that as you watch, you learn that the original crew of rebels that were best friends in the original trilogy had become divided and lived their lives separate and alone, which makes the point of the original trilogy meaningless because, in essence, they accomplished nothing.
The next movie to come out by Disney was Star Wars Rogue One, a standalone film that was surprisingly good after the obscenity that fans had watched the past year. However, afterwards, we got three horrible movies in a row: Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, Solo, and Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker. Again, Episode IX is almost identical to Episode VI from the original trilogy. The villain, Emperor Palpatine, is the exact same person and he is even defeated the same way; his apprentice changes to the light side and kills him. Along with the similarity, the ending to the trilogy adds no character development, no romance or added emotion, and all the old characters die off alone and sad.
Now, you may be wondering, "Why does it matter if they are similar? They still have different characters and the fight scenes are different". That's true, but by making them so similar Disney made it seem that all the work and effort that the characters had done in the original trilogy to save the galaxy was meaningless, because a new corrupt government would just show up to take control and abuse the citizens of the galaxy. Disney made the original trilogy meaningless which is the main reason so many people are upset over the similarity in this trilogy.
Recently, old Lucasfilm members including Dave Filoni and even George Lucas have come back to Star Wars to help it progress into a better future. Season 7 of the Clone Wars was one of their better seasons, The Mandalorian is looking promising, and many other future Star Wars shows have been confirmed that many fans are still excited about. Hopefully, Disney will be able to turn Star Wars around and make it into a great franchise once again.
You seem very passionate and knowledgeable about StarWars, so what would you do differently to improve the franchise? (coming from someone who knows nothing about StarWars)
ReplyDeleteIf the Star Wars movies that Disney produced are so bad, would you have preferred it if they just weren't made at all? Or do you think that even though they are bad, they serve their purpose to complete Star Wars?
