Ben Nikpour Week 1- Mars: The Planet Not So Far Away
Similar to most other sixth graders at my school, an assembly just meant time out of class. I remember how my friends and I would plan out where we would meet so we could all sit together and talk during them. Looking back on it, that probably wasn’t the most respectful thing we could do, but we were just like all the other obnoxious kids in the room. I didn’t care much for assemblies, so when I heard that we would be missing three periods for one, all I could think about was how I would find my friends. My class didn’t get much notice for this assembly so I had to sit next to the random kid in my class. I am so glad for that because what I learned at that assembly would stick with me forever.
A nice young woman who worked for NASA walked across the large stage and asked a simple question, “Do you want to go to Mars?” As a closed-minded eleven-year-old, I just laughed at the question. I thought to myself, “obviously, but that's not possible, at least not for like a million years.” To my surprise, this woman said otherwise. She not only told us that it is possible, but she explained that when we were older, we would most likely be the people going there. Could this be true? Could I be the first person to step foot on Mars? These questions lead me to do a little research on the topic. I soon found out that my short-lived dream would most likely not come true as the odds of becoming an astronaut are slim to none.
The idea that our technology is advancing to the point where we can reach Mars shortly blows me away, even years after that assembly. More and more groundbreaking technology is released every day leading us closer to what I believed was just a fantasy. We now have tons of companies working on the same goal of reaching Mars. SpaceX, a space exploration company founded by Elon Musk, has plans to launch a crew of people to Mars as early as 2024. That is just three years away. The progress we have made in space exploration is insane. I cannot even begin to imagine how far we will travel in the upcoming decades and centuries. So let me leave you with this question: do you want to go to Mars?

In Jewish Studies in 9th grade we talked about this program about random people wanting to leave earth and just go to mars. In the end we found out it was fake. lol :D
ReplyDeleteMars seems super interesting and exciting.
ReplyDeleteI knew that we were close to going to Mars, but I thought it was going to be another decade, not as early as 2024. While I think the prospect is exciting, I don't think we should go to Mars. Looking at humanities past, I don't think we have made the best decisions when it comes to interacting with new people and that concerns me. I think based on past behavior it would be better for us to remain on Earth.
