Ariella Green Week 1: Running Out of Something

Don’t ya hate when you run out of something like an ingredient at home? For instance, I am a coffee connoisseur, and I hate when we run out of milk when I want to enjoy a nice cup of coffee. This past Wednesday, there was no milk left for me in the morning. When there is no milk at home, then there is not a drinkable cup of coffee for me because I like mine either as a latte or a cappuccino. The problem is without a cup of Joe, I find it a challenge to get up and start my day. Instead of having my usual cup of coffee on Wednesday morning, I had to suffer with a cup of tea. I could have chosen to spend money at my local Starbucks, but I had to be at school on time. However, since not everyone can relate to this sort of dilemma, I’ll apply it to another situation to make it more comprehensible and personal. For example, let’s say it’s Friday and your mother is preparing the Sabbath meal for the evening, but she’s forgotten to buy the chicken for the soup. Now we all can agree (I hope) that it’s not Shabbat without some good old-fashioned chicken soup. Your mother will either have to go or make you go to Publix to buy some chicken. This creates an inconvenience for you because you have to decide whether you should (a) run out to the store now? Or do you (b) forget it and move on with your day? I find the answer depends on your mood, and how willing you are to rectify the situation. In the first scenario, even though I love coffee, I had tea as an alternative. In the second scenario, there was no alternative because there was no soup at home that would be acceptable to eat on Shabbat. I believe that if you have a substitute at home that’s sufficient, you do not need to go out of your way to get that ingredient. Regardless, these types of situations can ruin your day since they were unexpected.

Open ended question: What would you do, would you go to the store to get something, or would you be lazy?

Comments

  1. I can relate to wanting something from my fridge, but not having it. My choice would be to just not have it. It takes a lot of effort to go out to the store, so instead I would just save it for another day and have an alternate solution that I have in my house.

  2. I hate when this happens. It seems to happen to me more than others, so I'm happy to hear that I'm not alone. I don't drink coffee, so that particular issue hasn't happened to me. However, the most annoying thing for me is definitely when I run out of milk for cereal.

  3. I relate to this scenario. Sometimes, I am so looking forward to eating something and next thing I know, I can't eat it because we don't have all the ingredients to make it. Often times, I am lazy to go to the store to buy things and instead, will make myself something else.

  4. I feel like if I really want a certain food I would force myself to go out and get it. Even though I'm really lazy there's nothing like eating what you're craving.

  5. I completely agree! I hate when I really feel like eating something and there isn't any of that left in the house. I don't go and pick up some of what I'm craving every time I crave it, otherwise I'd be going back and forth from the grocery store all the time!
